Where it stops: it lives inside the Music app on your Mac. It has no Syphon or NDI output, no way to drive a projector rig, no MIDI control, and no control over what the visuals do. It is a window effect, not a stage instrument. The moment someone else is watching, this stops being the right tool.
The five-dollar tier: Phosphor and Animus
Phosphor ($4.99 on the Mac App Store) is the strongest cheap option right now. It is native Apple Silicon, requires macOS 14.4 or later, runs on Metal 3, and captures system audio directly using Core Audio’s process tap, so it reacts to whatever your Mac is playing, from any app, with no router tricks. The open source tier: projectM and Butterchurn
projectM is the open-source reimplementation of MilkDrop, the most beloved Windows visualizer ever made. The core library is actively developed (version 4.1.7 landed in July 2026 on GitHub) and runs cross-platform. The catch: the main project ships libraries, and the end-user frontends live in separate projects, so getting a working Mac app means checking the releases and picking a frontend that still builds. If you love MilkDrop presets, it is worth the effort.
Butterchurn is a WebGL port of MilkDrop 2 that runs in the browser (GitHub). Zero install, free, MIT licensed. It is a browser tab, so it is a listening visualizer and nothing more, but for a party playlist on a laptop it is honestly enough.
