One Mac generates the show. Bridge its Syphon output to NDI and multiple Mac or hardware receivers consume the stream. Broadcast switchers, LED wall controllers, secondary projectors, and livestream encoders all read from one source pipeline.
Festival LED walls are pixel-dense. 4K is the floor for sidestage walls; mainstage walls increasingly want 6K or 8K. MetalFX upscaling on M3 Max+ delivers 8K from a 4K render at near-zero overhead.
Festival sets cost too much to be killed by a single dead controller. Run a primary MIDI controller plus a backup, both mapped to the same RenderWave session. If one drops, the other carries the set.
Cold-boot to ready-to-trigger should be under 90 seconds. RenderWave restores the last loaded show on launch: shader cache pre-compiled, MIDI mappings hot-reloaded, audio input armed.
RenderWave outputs Syphon, and a Syphon-to-NDI bridge puts that feed on the network. NDI is the standard transport for festival production. Three common topologies.
Primary MacBook Pro runs RenderWave and outputs Syphon. A Syphon-to-NDI bridge puts that feed on a wired gigabit connection to the venue network. A broadcast switcher (NewTek TriCaster, vMix, Blackmagic ATEM Constellation) receives it as a clean NDI input source. The show is now switchable in the FOH video chain.
Primary Mac runs the live show. Secondary Mac runs the same session as a hot failover, ingesting the same audio split, the same MIDI feed, the same Link clock. Each Mac bridges its Syphon output to NDI on the same network. The FOH switcher selects between them, so if the primary crashes you switch in under a second.
Many current LED wall processors (Brompton Tessera, Megapixel HELIOS, and Novastar lines among them) can take NDI input, though support varies by model and firmware; verify with your hardware before show day. Render at 4K, bridge RenderWave's Syphon output to NDI, and send it to the wall processor, which handles tile mapping and color calibration. The NDI spec lives at ndi.video.

MetalFX is Apple's first-party spatial upscaling framework, the same tech Apple uses in Final Cut Pro and modern Mac games. RenderWave uses MetalFX at the output stage to deliver 8K from a 4K-native render in a single pass on M3 Max and newer.

The MacBook Pro M3 Max draws under 80W at full GPU load. An equivalent x86 workstation laptop running cross-platform VJ software draws 180-250W. At an outdoor festival running on generator power, that's a 3x difference in battery life, fan noise, and thermal output.
The practical effects: M3 Max MacBook Pro runs 5-6 hours on battery at full GPU load. Generator failure on a sidestage doesn't kill the show. Sealed-chassis design means no dust ingress at desert festivals or beach venues. Apple's published 95°F sustained operating temperature holds up in hot booth conditions where vented x86 laptops thermal-throttle hard.

What touring AV pros ask before adding RenderWave to a festival rig.
Not directly. RenderWave outputs Syphon, the Mac-native GPU texture-sharing protocol. To put a RenderWave feed on NDI for a multi-machine festival rig, run a Syphon-to-NDI bridge (such as Syphon2NDI) on the booth Mac. It reads RenderWave's Syphon output and republishes it as a discoverable NDI source for venue receivers, broadcast switchers, and LED wall processors. Locally, you can record or stream the same Syphon output through OBS at the same time.

Apple Silicon thermals are significantly better than Intel-era MacBooks. M3 Max, M4 Max, and M5 Max sustain full GPU load at ambient temperatures up to 35°C / 95°F when the laptop has clean airflow (booth fan, elevated stand). Above 35°C ambient, use an external cooling stand or run the laptop in a shaded booth with active ventilation. The ARM64 architecture's power efficiency means less heat generated per unit of GPU work than equivalent x86 hardware.
Yes. Run RenderWave on two Macs, both tempo-locked over Ableton Link and fed the same audio split and MIDI control. The secondary is a hot failover. PRO DJ LINK is Pioneer's proprietary tempo-sync protocol for CDJ networks. RenderWave doesn't speak PRO DJ LINK directly, but every modern festival mainstage rig also runs Ableton Link or sends a clean audio split, both of which RenderWave handles natively. For PRO DJ LINK-only rigs, third-party bridges exist (LinkPro and dvs.li/prodjlink, for example) that convert PRO DJ LINK to Ableton Link in software; verify the bridge with your hardware before show day.
