The self-VJ DJ problem
Why DJs have always hired a VJ, and why that math finally broke.
For two decades, DJs who wanted custom visuals had three options: hire a VJ (expensive, depends on chemistry), play to whatever house visuals the venue runs (generic, can clash with your set), or pre-render a video set in advance (rigid, kills the mixing).
Hiring a VJ runs $200-600 a night in major markets. For a weekly resident playing 50 nights a year, that's $10K-30K in VJ costs against gigs that often pay $300-800 each. The math doesn't work unless you're a headliner.
The historical reason DJs couldn't self-VJ was workload: Resolume and VDMX require clip-launching during the set, which means you're either VJing or DJing, not both. Beat-locked strobes

Link is Ableton's free network-clock protocol, and every modern DJ app supports it. Rekordbox 6.7+, Serato Pro 3+, Traktor Pro 3.10+, and Ableton Live 11+ all broadcast or receive Link over WiFi or wired Ethernet.

Can DJs VJ for themselves?
Yes, with the right software. The traditional reason DJs hire VJs is that legacy VJ apps (Resolume, VDMX) require building modular patches that need a second pair of hands during a set. RenderWave is built around audio-reactive presets, so once you set up your rig in soundcheck, the visuals follow your mixing automatically. Will RenderWave use my CPU during my DJ set?
Barely. RenderWave renders on your Mac's GPU via Metal compute shaders, so it leaves the CPU to your DJ software. Rekordbox, Serato, and Traktor keep their headroom; the render runs on the GPU.
Does it work with Rekordbox, Serato, or Traktor?
Yes. RenderWave doesn't talk to your DJ software directly; it analyzes the audio output of your DJ rig. Send your DJ mixer booth output to a USB audio interface, route that into RenderWave, and the visuals react to the actual mix you're playing. Can I use my APC40 mkII?
Yes. RenderWave has dedicated LED feedback support for the Akai APC40 mkII: clip-launch grid maps to preset triggers, the master fader maps to overall intensity, and the bank of knobs maps to shader parameters. Does Ableton Link work for tempo sync?
Yes. What MacBook do I need to DJ and VJ at the same time?
M2 Pro or newer recommended. An M1 Air can run RenderWave alone at 1080p, but adding a DJ software workload on top is where thermal headroom matters. M2 Pro MacBook Pro 14" is the sweet spot: quiet under load, plenty of GPU headroom for 4K HDMI out, and the active cooling keeps you out of throttle during a 4-hour set.
