CoGe VJ to RenderWave: A Migration Guide

CoGe VJ was discontinued by Imimot in October 2022, with the final version 1.8.6 tied to deprecated Quartz Composer and macOS Mojave. RenderWave is the modern Mac-native VJ replacement built on Swift, Metal 3, and Apple Silicon. CoGe's modular workflow, Syphon integration, and audio-reactive primitives have all evolved into RenderWave's curated production-grade pipeline.

Quick Verdict

CoGe VJ stopped shipping in October 2022. RenderWave is the modern Mac-native successor built on Metal 3, Apple Silicon, and 2026 macOS.

If you're still running CoGe on an old Mojave laptop in the back of your studio, this page is for you. The migration is workflow-level, not a one-click import, but RenderWave's curated shader library covers most of the territory CoGe's plugin scene used to cover. The perpetual license is $299.

What Happened to CoGe

CoGe VJ was a Mac-only modular VJ application from Imimot, a small Hungarian studio. Through the 2012–2020 window it was beloved by a specific slice of the Mac VJ scene: modular signal flow, custom Quartz Composer plugin libraries, Syphon-native, lean enough to run on the laptops CoGe crews toured with.

The fatal dependency was Quartz Composer. CoGe's entire plugin model (every Lumen, Vade, Vidvox, and community-built QC patch) sat on top of Apple's QC framework. When Apple began deprecating Quartz Composer (signals starting in macOS 10.15 Catalina, removed from Xcode releases, no 64-bit-only successor), CoGe's foundation rotted in real time. Plugins stopped loading. Effects rendered black. The community started moving to VDMX, Modul8, and TouchDesigner.

In October 2022, Imimot announced CoGe was discontinued. Version 1.8.6 was the final release. The team pivoted engineering effort to two adjacent products: Mitti (cue playback, used heavily in theater and museum installations) and Vezér (MIDI / OSC / DMX timeline sequencer). Both are active, Apple Silicon native, and well-regarded, but neither is a generative VJ instrument. That's the slot that opened up.

If you're reading this, you're probably in one of two camps. Either you have a Mojave laptop in a road case still running CoGe for nostalgia gigs, or you remember loving CoGe's modular feel and are looking for the closest modern equivalent. RenderWave is that equivalent, built from scratch on Metal 3 for the Macs you actually own now.

Coming from CoGe: Migration Guide

Five workflow steps. Budget an afternoon for the rebuild.

Step 1 · Backup what you can while you still can

CoGe is end-of-life. Your Mojave laptop is one bad SSD away from being unrecoverable. Open every CoGe scene you care about and export it to video; ProRes 422 HQ is the safest format. You won't be opening these .coge files in a future Mac, ever, but the visual output you captured will outlive the project format. Do this first. Today.

Step 2 · Map your MIDI controllers in RenderWave

Whatever you used in CoGe (APC40, Launchpad, generic 8-knob), RenderWave's MIDI Learn maps it in minutes. Same MIDI / OSC standards, no breaking changes. Launchpad gets LED feedback. APC40 mkII gets parameter feedback on the encoders. Your muscle memory transfers straight over.

Step 3 · Adopt curated shaders instead of plugin libraries

CoGe lived and died by its Quartz Composer plugin libraries. RenderWave's 85 production-grade shaders cover the same conceptual territory (tunnels, fluids, geometric primitives, displacement, glitch, noise, kaleidoscopes), but they're Metal compute kernels written natively for 2026 GPUs, not QC patches duct-taped to a dying framework. The curated approach means less rig-building, more performing.

Step 4 · Set up Syphon out for your existing rig

If your show ends in MadMapper for projection mapping, or feeds VDMX for compositing, you keep that exactly. Enable Syphon out in RenderWave, accept it as Syphon input in your downstream app. Same Syphon standard CoGe used, same wiring on the destination side; you only swap the source engine.

Step 5 · Choose Perpetual If You Want Ownership

CoGe veterans are exactly the audience the perpetual tier was designed for. $299 one-time, with 12 months of updates included. If you bought CoGe years ago and stretched it for a decade, the perpetual license is the same shape of deal. Only the engine underneath is built for the next decade instead of the last one.

What You Keep

Mac-only identity

CoGe was unapologetically Mac. RenderWave is too. No Windows port, no cross-platform abstraction, every line targets Apple Silicon and Metal 3.

Modular spirit

RenderWave's per-shader feature flags and per-parameter audio modulation preserve the modular feel CoGe taught the Mac VJ world, without the Quartz Composer dependency.

Syphon workflow

Same Syphon standard, in and out. Your existing MadMapper or VDMX rig accepts RenderWave the same way it accepted CoGe.

What Changes

Modern Metal performance

Every shader is a Metal compute kernel running native on M1–M5. No CPU bottleneck, no QC framework tax, no Rosetta. Frame budget goes to pixels, not translation.

Curated quality, not infinite scope

CoGe was a kit. RenderWave is an instrument. Trade infinite plugin sprawl for 85 well-built shaders you can trust on a mainstage at 3am.

Active development, no Quartz Composer rot

Regular releases (see the changelog), a published roadmap, and no dependency on an Apple framework that's already been deprecated. Built to outlast macOS Tahoe and whatever comes after.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CoGe still being developed?

No. Imimot announced CoGe's discontinuation in October 2022. The team retired the modular VJ application and refocused engineering on Mitti (cue playback) and Vezér (MIDI/OSC/DMX sequencer). CoGe has received no functional updates since version 1.8.6.

What's the last version of CoGe?

CoGe 1.8.6, shipped October 2022 as the final release. After that date Imimot stopped publishing updates. The 1.8.6 build remains available as a download but is locked to legacy macOS releases that still support Quartz Composer.

Does CoGe still work on modern Macs?

Only up to macOS 10.14 Mojave. CoGe relies on Apple's Quartz Composer framework, which Apple deprecated and progressively removed from later macOS releases. On macOS 11 Big Sur and later, Quartz Composer compositions fail to load, which means most CoGe plugins simply do not run. Apple Silicon Macs running current macOS cannot use CoGe in any production capacity.

What did the CoGe team move to?

Imimot now develops Mitti (cue playback) and Vezér (MIDI/OSC/DMX sequencer). Per imimot.com, both products are actively maintained and Apple Silicon native. Neither is a generative VJ instrument; that lane is unfilled in Imimot's lineup, which is what created the opening RenderWave fills.

Why should CoGe users switch to RenderWave?

RenderWave is Mac-native Metal 3, runs on Apple Silicon (M1–M5), and ships with curated shaders that replace CoGe's plugin libraries. It keeps the parts of CoGe that worked (Mac-only identity, modular signal flow, Syphon integration, audio-reactive primitives) and rebuilds them on a 2026 GPU stack. No Quartz Composer dependency, no 10.14 ceiling, and regular releases; see the changelog.

Can I migrate my CoGe project files?

Not directly. CoGe scene files are Quartz Composer-tied and there is no automated import path. Migration is workflow-level: rebuild your scene in RenderWave using curated shaders plus MIDI mappings. Budget an afternoon for the rebuild; RenderWave's 85 shaders cover most of the territory CoGe plugin libraries used to cover.

Perpetual License for CoGe Veterans

$299 perpetual. The same shape of deal you got from CoGe, only this engine is built for the next decade, not the last one.
